Gemini, Google’s artificial intelligence model, has been criticized for some time for its image creation feature. The artificial intelligence, which depicts historical figures differently, was on the agenda of social media with its Asian and Black approaches. Google then disabled Gemini’s face creation tool.

Google Senior Vice President Prabhakar Raghavan said in a blog post that they are aware of Gemin’s problems. Stating that the measures taken against content creation are not enough, the executive said that the rules need to be better specified.
In particular, Gemini did not listen to the rules that aimed to show various ethnicities in pictures. On the other hand, it also ignored situations where it should not depict certain groups. Efforts to avoid sensitive topics led the model to be overly cautious and to reject some guidelines altogether.
This caused the system to be over-compensatory in some responses and too restrictive in others. It led to the creation of unwanted images in commands involving people of different races.
In light of the issues, Google temporarily discontinued Gemini’s face creation tool. Raghavan said they will work harder to properly handle prompts involving humans while avoiding harmful output.
The company could not guarantee that the AI would always deliver decent images. But it said it will continue to evaluate Gemini and make adjustments for offending images.
